Application

During unforeseen circumstances such as tube/rail strikes, participants that are unable to attend will be refunded half the workshop fee, provided they inform WPF Therapy by email or telephone at least two days before the workshop takes place. At times the weather conditions such as snow may impact transport to WPF Therapy, In this circumstance if the participant cannot attend the workshop, no refund will be made. If the trainer cancels the fee will be refunded. WPF Therapy reserves the right to cancel the workshop should minimum numbers not be reached by the closing time for applications. In the event of cancellation by the participant (for any reason), WPF Therapy reserves the right to a 25% cancellation fee. In the event of participant cancellation within the last working week (i.e. Monday to Friday) before the course, the fee will not be refunded. This is a repeat of last year’s very successful and fully subscribed study group.

  • Like ‘Hate in the countertransference’ but not sure about Klein? These study groups will help you deepen your understanding of Kleinian theory and develop your clinical application of the theory.

  • Find yourself fending off negative transference? More at home with two-person than triangular dynamics? Learn more about this dynamic and how to work with it.

  • Not confident about when and how to challenge?

If you attend these study groups, you can expect:

  1. A deeper understanding of projective and identificatory processes in work with clients.
  2. A broader conception of how internal and external worlds interact and affect each other.
  3. Greater clarity about where you stand in relation to key theoretical and ethical issues.
  4. An overview of what the Kleinian tradition has contributed to British Object Relations.

There will be a different paper for each session. The programme centres on readings from key figures in the Kleinian tradition – Freud, Segal, Rosenfeld, Bion, Money-Kyrle, Meltzer, Joseph, Steiner, Britton. We will think about the issues raised in the readings in relation to participants’ clinical experiences and dilemmas.

Course Reading

Participants will be expected to have a basic understanding of the concepts of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions and of projective identification. Detailed session reading will be sent on booking.

David Smart’s first career was in multi-disciplinary work in mainstream educational and off-site settings with secondary-age pupils experiencing difficulties. He trained with WPF Therapy to practise as a school counsellor and work privately as a psychotherapist with adults. He is committed to collaborative learning and understands development as a life-long, spiral process. Publications include “Play’ in practice in psychotherapy and education’, European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling, Volume 10, Issue 2, 2008, pp. 147 – 158 (with L. Gomez).

These sessions will be of interest to practising counsellors/psychotherapists and trainees engaged in clinical work. There will be a focus on working with the ideas and issues clinically. Priority will be given to participants who can attend all 10 sessions.

The psychodynamic assessment can be “one of the most momentous days of [a client’s] life.” (Coltart, 1986).

The first meeting between assessor and client can be highly charged. The skilled assessor must quickly engage the client in a complex and emotional encounter which may surprise, disturb or disarm. The quality of the assessment meeting and the skill of the assessor form a crucial part of the process of beginning and its emotional impact often resonates well beyond the encounter itself. Sound assessment skills are crucial to effective clinical practice. However, professional trainings can often give insufficient time and focus to developing understanding of the assessment process.

The aim of this course is to understand the importance of the assessment as essential to good beginnings, to gain an overview of some theory and practice of clinical assessment and an understanding of the emotional impact of the assessment encounter, and its transference implications, to develop skills in assessment interview technique, psychodynamic formulation and approaching the assessment report.

Day 1: Introducing Assessment: Saturday, 19th May 2018

This day will introduce some key clinical concepts and attitudes for sound psychodynamic assessment.  Participants will consider the impact and influence of the assessment encounter and a range of assessment skills including the conduct of the psychodynamic assessment interview, the maintenance of an evaluative/therapeutic balance, making a recommendation and considering limits. All content will be considered in terms of providing formal clinical assessment in organisational settings and in private practice.

Day 2: Assessment – Essential Skills: Saturday, 2nd June 2018

This day will build on learning and skills from Day 1. Participants will explore a range of assessment techniques including approaches to initial contact, risk assessment and management, psychodynamic formulation skills and writing the assessment report.   All practice will be considered in terms of providing formal clinical assessment in organisational settings and in private practice.

Day 3: Assessment Supervision: Saturday, 23rd June (Day 3a) or Saturday, 30th June 2018 (Day 3b)

Participants on this day will engage in a live supervision of clinical assessments presented by course participants who have volunteered to conduct an assessment following Day 2. This day will consolidate learning from Days 1 and 2 and enables both presenters and participants to engage fully in the assessment process through supervisory discussion.

*WPF Therapy reserves the right to cancel either Day 3a or Day 3b if there are insufficient participants to run both days. Please indicate if you could attend either day.

Course Leader
Cate Lyon trained at WPF Therapy. She practices and supervises in NHS Primary Care and in Private Practice. She also supervises in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT). Cate has a specialist interest in brief therapeutic encounters, working at pace and depth. As a seminar leader, supervisor, tutor and clinical assessor, Cate teaches and trains extensively in the field. She provides professional CPD workshops for a range of public and private organisations.

Course requirements
The course will be helpful to qualified and training counsellors and psychotherapists who are interested in developing their understanding and technique in clinical assessment. This course is psychodynamic in orientation although practitioners of other modalities are welcome to attend. You must be currently engaged in clinical work in order to be eligible to attend this course. Ideally, you should be in a position to carry out assessments in your work. Participants who volunteer to conduct and present an assessment for Day 3 must be qualified practitioners or in supervised honorary placements with permission to conduct an assessment. We will need four volunteers on Day 3a and 3b so if you are interested in volunteering to present please indicate your availability to do so and ensure that you can make arrangements to conduct an assessment.

Please Note:
Those wishing to volunteer to present an assessment on Day 3 should ensure they are in a position to do so and have secured permission from their organisations where necessary. Assessments can only be conducted at WPF Therapy Clinic by participants who are currently WPF Honorary Assessors and with the prior agreement of their supervisor.

Please state on your application your first and second preference to attend either Day 3a or Day 3b, or if you could attend either. We will do our best to accommodate your first choice but this may not always be possible.

Historically the matter of an individual’s ethnicity, culture and the process of racialisation has largely been ignored in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

  • Why is it so hard to discuss an individual’s ethnicity or culture in seminars or supervision?

  • What happens when we fail to acknowledge difference?

  • How can thinking about ethnicity and culture help to enrich our profession?

Whilst most trainings have introduced seminars on the subject, it is rarely considered in the theoretical aspects of the trainings in an integrated and ordinary way, nor is it often discussed in clinical seminars and supervision. This colour-blind position fails to see or acknowledge difference and hence the white individual is able to avoid the shame and guilt involved in owning any racist thought. For the black trainee an important aspect of their identity and experience is not allowed expression, making the training experience a difficult one. Helen Morgan will present a paper suggesting that this situation has implications, not only for potential black applicants and patients, but also for our professional organisations where this covert form of racism shields ourselves and our theories from a potentially creative and enlivening challenge.

Speaker
Helen Morgan is a Fellow of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and a training analyst and supervisor for the Jungian Analytic Association within the BPF. She now works mainly in private practice as an analyst and also supervises in both the individual and the group setting. Her background is in therapeutic communities both with adolescents and in adult mental health. She is interested in developing an understanding of racism from a psychoanalytic/Jungian analytic perspective and has written a number of papers on the subject. She is currently chair of the British Psychoanalytic Council.

  1.  Have a clearer understanding of what a psychotherapy training involves and specifically what is required of you on the introductory course at WPF Therapy.
  1. Have a basic understanding of the psychodynamic perspective and how this fits in with other theoretical models such as humanistic, CBT and integrative therapy etc.
  1. Have begun to explore how you relate to others and to yourself and why therapy training requires deep, personal work.

Brief Outline 

The course will be taught using a variety of techniques including discussion in small and large groups and paired exercises.  The day will be broken down into 4 segments although there may be some changes depending on the group.

Session 1. The Mystery of Psychotherapy
We will look at the differences between psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and counselling. What are the different models of counselling and psychotherapy and where does psychodynamic psychotherapy sit on that spectrum? We will also explore what we need to think about if we want to train.

Session 2 Psychodynamic Concepts- Is this perspective for you?
A basic introduction to psychodynamic concepts. Is the psychodynamic the model for us, or are other options better suited to our personalities?

 Session 3- Our emotional world
We will begin to explore ideas of emotional intelligence and our reflective capacity. What qualities does a counsellor or therapist need and is this really what I want to do?

Session 4- Communication and therapy today
Where does therapy and counselling belong in today’s world? What jobs are there at the end of the training? What will I learn at WPF Therapy and is it the right place for me to begin this journey?

Target Audience: This course will be of interest if you want to learn more about counselling, therapy or psychotherapy training and/or you wish to develop counselling skills in your current work.  No previous knowledge is required.

The WPF Therapy CBT Skills course is an entry level training in the foundation theory and skills of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This course is suitable for students in clinical settings new to the field as well as existing therapists, psychologists, counsellors or coaches who wish to add CBT methods to their professional toolkit.

About Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy
CBT is a form of psychological therapy that stresses the role of conscious psychological processes in the maintenance of emotional disorder especially the interaction between negative thoughts, moods and coping behaviours. While most people report experiencing negative thoughts and feelings of low mood and anxiety these are typically transient experiences. In emotional disorder the interaction of negative thoughts and maladaptive coping responses interferes to cause a perpetuation and deepening of disordered cognition and emotion. In addition, many coping strategies cause their own additional problems. CBT aims to break these cycles of maintenance in therapy by increasing the client’s self-awareness and teaching a new and more adaptive repertoire of responses to old triggers like negative automatic thoughts. CBT protocols are frequently recommended in the NICE guidelines as the first-line treatment for common mental health problems.

The Training
Our training is highly interactive and experiential and trainees will get the opportunity to learn CBT “from the inside” through extensive role-play and the application of the principles in their own lives between training sessions. Skills will be demonstrated live by the trainer and using video demonstrations.  The course closely follows the Department of Health CBT Competencies Framework that describes the various activities which need to be brought together to carry out CBT effectively and in line with best practice for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. This course covers basic CBT competencies, specific behavioural and cognitive therapy techniques and some problem-specific competencies.

Course aims
The skills training aims to provide a solid understanding of the basic theory underpinning CBT and to equip participants with the core skills commonly used in therapy with common mental health disorders. At the end of the course participants should be conversant in

  1. The fundamental CBT theory of psychological disorder and particularly maintenance processes
  2. The principles of a collaborative therapeutic relationship
  3. CBT assessment of client problems
  4. CBT case formulation
  5. Setting appropriate goals with the client
  6. Structuring therapy
  7. Using and interpreting some common measures and questionnaires in therapy
  8. Core CBT skills for working with negative automatic thoughts and maladaptive behaviour
  9. Delivering empirically supported protocols for some common presentations

Who is it for?
This course is for mental health professionals who are working clinically.  You may be a social worker, doctor, nurse, counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist trained in another modality, for example.  There is an expectation that participants are already proficient in the generic trans-theoretical therapeutic competencies.  As an entry requirement, you will be able to demonstrate proficiency in relationship skills from prior training and clinical experience. Qualified counsellors and psychotherapists successfully completing this course may be eligible for a clinical placement in the WPF Therapy CBT Service. Please see Entry Requirements below.

Course Tutor
Gerry McCarron is an experienced CBT therapist, trainer and supervisor. He completed a MSc in Counselling at Goldsmiths College, University of London, in 1993 under Professor Windy Dryden before undertaking CBT training at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre in 1994. He subsequently undertook the MSc in Advanced Cognitive Therapy – Training and Dissemination at Oxford University, completing in 2008. He has also attended training events and workshops internationally with leaders in the field.

Gerry currently works part-time as a supervisor in an IAPT service and part-time in a NHS Mental Health Trust secondary care service where he has specialised for several years in the application of CBT to complex clinical cases and the provision of supervision and training to psychologists, CBT therapists, junior doctors and trainees. As part of his role he established an in-house CBT training initiative that has successfully provided foundation training to many staff from different professional groups across the Trust.  He has been Course Director on an IAPT training scheme developed by Barnet, Enfield & Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust and Reading University and course contributor to CBT training courses at Goldsmiths College. For several years, he also led the CBT training and supervision component for specialised medical registrars training in psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic. Gerry has collaborated in research projects exploring clinical interventions for eating disorders and cognitive processes including rumination and self-criticism.

  • How can thinking about ethnicity and culture help to enrich our profession?

Whilst most trainings have introduced seminars on the subject, it is rarely considered in the theoretical aspects of the trainings in an integrated and ordinary way, nor is it often discussed in clinical seminars and supervision. This colour-blind position fails to see or acknowledge difference and hence the white individual is able to avoid the shame and guilt involved in owning any racist thought. For the black trainee an important aspect of their identity and experience is not allowed expression, making the training experience a difficult one. Helen Morgan will present a paper suggesting that this situation has implications, not only for potential black applicants and patients, but also for our professional organisations where this covert form of racism shields ourselves and our theories from a potentially creative and enlivening challenge.

Speaker
Helen Morgan is a Fellow of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and a training analyst and supervisor for the Jungian Analytic Association within the BPF. She now works mainly in private practice as an analyst and also supervises in both the individual and the group setting. Her background is in therapeutic communities both with adolescents and in adult mental health. She is interested in developing an understanding of racism from a psychoanalytic/Jungian analytic perspective and has written a number of papers on the subject. She is currently chair of the British Psychoanalytic Council.

Attachment theory is well known to most training and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.  Following on from and building on the work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth there is now a vast literature on attachment and its role in infants’ and adults’ lives.  The ideas have come to be a major theoretical strand in current thinking with the more recent ideas of neuroscience supporting Bowlby’s early insights.

This lecture will cover how contemporary neuroscience and attachment research provide the building blocks of a clinically-relevant theory applicable to a range of psychodynamic approaches. Themes discussed will include: sensitivity and secure attachment; narrative competence; enhancing mentalising skills; radical acceptance; ‘free energy’ and mutative interventions. Links with Independent and Relational Psychoanalysis will be outlined.

  • Are you interested in re-visiting Attachment Theory, with a particular focus on insecure on insecure attachment?

  • Do you want to increase your understanding of how substance abuse can be seen as a manifestation of insecure attachment in the addicted client?

  • Would you like to consider how your own attachment style manifests in behaviour, alongside considering your own clinical material?

Attachment is defined as the lifelong need human beings have for affectionate ties with significant other human beings. It is a biological necessity for us to have a secure attachment relationship. Although much of the research on attachment has focused on infants and children, attachment theory is also applicable to adults in a psychodynamic framework, as 75% of attachment patterns remain stable through to adulthood.

The impact of childhood events often casts a deep shadow over us in adult life. Understanding Attachment Theory can serve as a solid foundation for understanding the development of ineffective coping strategies, and the underlying dynamics of a client’s emotional difficulties.

This workshop will consider the aetiology of a person’s addiction as resulting initially from a place of broken attachment relationships.

During the day participants will briefly re-visit attachment theory and styles. We will consider the links between attachment insecurity and: substance misuse, disordered eating, gambling, and sex addiction. There will be presentation of theory and research alongside clinical vignettes. Group clinical discussion will explore therapist attachment insecurity provoked in the client work.

There is an expectation that participants are familiar with the basics of attachment theory (Attachment in Psychotherapy, David J. Wallin, 2017).

Sarah Pennock MSc, Pg. Dip, Integrative Counsellor. FDAP. MBACP (Accred.) is an Addiction and Attachment Based Therapist. She has worked with residential addiction treatment centres, out-patient programmes and addiction support agencies. Following her specialist training in Addiction Psychology at South Bank University, Sarah completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Attachment-Based Therapy to complement her addiction work, discovering how and why our individual attachment styles often shape the way we respond to challenges and anxieties, including all that is evoked within addiction recovery. Sarah runs a busy private practice in Marylebone, London. Her working style integrates psychodynamic theories of personality development, cognitive approaches to decision making, mentalisation and self-observation.

What can you expect at the end of this workshop?

 By the end of the workshop we hope that you will have answers to many of the above questions, or if not, a clear direction.  You will also:

  1.  Have a clearer understanding of what a psychotherapy training involves and specifically what is required of you on the introductory course at WPF Therapy.
  1. Have a basic understanding of the psychodynamic perspective and how this fits in with other theoretical models such as humanistic, CBT and integrative therapy etc.
  1. Have begun to explore how you relate to others and to yourself and why therapy training requires deep, personal work.
  1. Have a greater appreciation of the skills involved in active listening and how these are developed on the introductory course at WPF Therapy. 

Brief Outline 

The course will be taught using a variety of techniques including discussion in small and large groups and paired exercises.  The day will be broken down into 4 segments although there may be some changes depending on the group.

Session 1. The Mystery of Psychotherapy
We will look at the differences between psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and counselling. What are the different models of counselling and psychotherapy and where does psychodynamic psychotherapy sit on that spectrum? We will also explore what we need to think about if we want to train.

Session 2 Psychodynamic Concepts- Is this perspective for you?
A basic introduction to psychodynamic concepts. Is the psychodynamic the model for us, or are other options better suited to our personalities?

 Session 3- Our emotional world
We will begin to explore ideas of emotional intelligence and our reflective capacity. What qualities does a counsellor or therapist need and is this really what I want to do?

Session 4- Communication and therapy today
Where does therapy and counselling belong in today’s world? What jobs are there at the end of the training? What will I learn at WPF Therapy and is it the right place for me to begin this journey?

Target Audience: This course will be of interest if you want to learn more about counselling, therapy or psychotherapy training and/or you wish to develop counselling skills in your current work.  No previous knowledge is required.

Dr. Ruth Schmidt Neven is a child psychotherapist and clinical psychologist who trained at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She worked for many years in child and family mental health in the NHS in the UK before coming to Australia to take up the inaugural position of Chief Psychotherapist at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. Ruth is now founder director of the Centre for Child and Family Development in Melbourne and is engaged in clinical work as well as extensive professional training throughout Australia and overseas.  In the UK she has run training workshops for NScience and for the University of Cambridge Child Wellbeing Forum. Ruth is the author of five books and clinical papers. Her most recent publication from Routledge is ‘Time-limited psychodynamic psychotherapy with children and adolescents: An interactive approach’. Her previous publications include ‘Core principles of assessment and therapeutic communication with children, parents and families’ also published by Routledge and ‘Rethinking ADHD: An illness of our time’ published by Allen&Unwin. She is also the author of a book for parents ‘Growing Kids: Nurturing relationships from tots to teens’ published by Full Circle Publications.

We are all engaged with our relationship with food in some way or another.  For some, this is a complex dynamic, for others it seems straightforward.  Within clinical work the theory and focus is often on eating disorders, but our relationship with food is far wider than that.

  1. Are you working with clients who are struggling with their relationship with food?

  2. Are you interested in understanding more about the role of attachment in childhood and adult life through the medium and metaphor of feeding?

  3. What is ‘normal’ eating and how do we distinguish this from ‘disordered’ eating?

  4. How is the way and what we eat influenced by social, historical, transgenerational and gender issues?

Through attending this workshop you will gain :

  1. A better understanding of secure and insecure attachment as expressed through food
  2. A deeper awareness of the impact of social, historical, transgenerational and gender issues on how and what we eat
  3. Ways of thinking about our clients, their attachment histories and relationships with themselves as expressed through feeding themselves and others
  4. Tools in the form of questions to bring into clinical work, both with eating disordered clients and where eating is not considered problematic
  5. Greater awareness of our own relationships – secure, insecure or disorganised – with food

From the start of life, feeding is a relational experience. The bond between caregiver and infant is brokered in the intimacy of feeding, and our attachment to food is an expression of the relationships we form with other people and ourselves. Our relationship with food expresses something of our attachment histories, secure or insecure: safety and security may be sought in eating or in refusal to eat.

This workshop explores how the relationship with food is shaped in early life in the context of our first attachments, and how food mediates relationships with other people and with ourselves throughout life. We will consider the place of food and feeding in maintaining adult social relationships. Eating disorders are considered from an attachment perspective but are not the sole focus.

The workshop will be accompanied by Powerpoint interspersed with DVD and clinical material. There will be discussion in pairs and small groups focused on specific questions. Participants will have opportunities to consider the role of food in their own lives and to reflect on their clients’ relationships with food, feeding and nourishment.

Workshop Leader
Linda Cundy is an attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice. She has run courses on attachment at the Wimbledon Guild since 2000. These have now been formalised into a Post Graduate Diploma in Attachment-Based Therapy, and Linda is the course director and lead tutor. She has also taught for two decades on psychotherapy and counselling courses.

She is the editor of Love in the Age of the Internet: Attachment in the Digital Era  (2015) Karnac, and Anxiously Attached: Understanding and Working with Preoccupied Attachment (2017).

This workshop aims to explore the nature of sibling relationships, why they feature prominently in our culture but have been neglected by psychoanalysis, and how they can be addressed in clinical work.

Sibling relationships feature very strongly in popular culture and in high culture, but seem to have been neglected by psychoanalysis. Dramatic plotlines involving brothers and sisters run through TV soaps, films, novels, fairy tales, Shakespeare and the Bible.
Why have siblings been so neglected by psychoanalysis? And do we need to pay more attention to sibling dynamics within ‘family constellations’ in our own clinical work? Perhaps the models and theories that we use need to expand.

  • Do we attend to sibling relationships/dynamics enough in our consulting rooms?
  • Does birth order influence personality?
  • What might the impact on sibling dynamics be of donor-conceived children, adopted siblings, surrogate births, multiple half siblings and step siblings?

By the end of the workshop participants should be able to explain, and use in their clinical work, psychodynamic perspectives on sibling relationships. This will be achieved through a theoretical presentation and interactive experiential exercises. Plenty of time will be allowed for discussion of both clinical work and other relevant material.

This workshop is open to qualified and training psychotherapists and counsellors. The theoretical orientation of the workshop will be psychodynamic but practitioners of other modalities are welcome to attend.

During the workshop the different routes into relationship – random romance, arranged marriage and selection through digital dating will be looked at. Attachment theory and psychodynamic understanding of couple relationships will be drawn upon.

This workshop will look at:

  • What’s going on when two people fall in love?
  • How do arranged marriages and partnerships formed online compare with romance?
  • What makes for a satisfactory long term relationship?

This workshop will reflect on:

  • Clients who have a painful story of broken relationships
  • Clients who move fast through relationships and don’t settle
  • Clients who haven’t had an adult sexual relationship and who may or may not consciously seek one.
