This course is offered online on Thursday mornings.

WPF Therapy was one of the first training organisations to develop a supervision training in 1985. Over the years it has developed its unique training in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic supervision in which theoretical understanding and clinical practice are linked.

This qualification is offered to experienced psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapists and counsellors who wish to train as supervisors of one to one psychotherapy or counselling. Applicants may also be integrative trained counsellors and psychotherapists who work psychodynamically and are interested in developing skills as a supervisor from a psychodynamic perspective. It is a two term, part-time post qualification certificate.

Who is this course for?

Applicants are required to be at least 2 years post-qualification with at least 500 hours of clinical practice (some of which may have been completed during training). This course is open to psychodynamically trained counsellors and psychotherapists and integrative trained counsellors and psychotherapists who work psychodynamically.

When and where does it take place?

This course takes place on Thursday mornings online (Microsoft Teams or Zoom depending on group size) from 9.30am – 12.40pm.  There will be no in building attendance for this course.  Applicants must have good broadband access, a private place for attending sessions, and technological competence to engage online.

There is a seminar and a supervision of supervision group which take place over two terms of ten weeks (i.e. 20 sessions).  Applicants will require a supervision placement and will need to complete 20 hours of logged counselling supervision for award of the Certificate.

Supervision of Supervision

WPF Therapy does not hold clinical responsibility for supervision work presented in supervision of supervision.

Presentation and participation in the supervision of supervision group is a central part of the course and course participants are required to supervise and present a minimum of two individual supervisees, or one group, for 20 hours of supervisory practice during the course. The supervision of supervision is from a psychodynamic perspective.  The work supervised and presented must be work with psychotherapists/counsellors treating individual adult patients, over the age of 18 years, and working within a psychodynamic, integrative or humanistic frame. We recommend that at least one supervisee is seeing an open ended client.  The supervision should normally take place in face to face meetings, at least fortnightly, although weekly is recommended. Supervising colleagues, friends or others with whom professional boundaries would be compromised is not appropriate.

Award

 For award of the Certificate:

  • A minimum of 80% attendance at 20 seminars and 20 supervision groups (i.e. 60 hours contact time).
  • Self-assessment and assessment by the supervisor of supervision. Informal peer assessment.
  • 2,500 word essay demonstrating an understanding of the theory and practice of supervision from a psychodynamic perspective.
  • Minimum 20 hours of logged counselling/psychotherapy supervision practice.
  • Completion of a reflective journal is recommended but not assessed.

How much does it cost?

£2,950 (Non-refundable registration fee of £100 plus two termly payments of £1,425).

Please note that if you are required to attend additional supervision of supervision after the two terms in order to successfully complete the course there will be an additional fee due.  This can sometimes be required if you have not met the requisite hours or if it is decided that you need more time to develop your supervision skills before award of the Certificate.  A  fee will also be charged if you are asked to rewrite and resubmit your essay.

 Entry Requirements

 Applicants must: 

  • be experienced psychodynamic counsellors who have completed a Diploma in Counselling through a BACP Accredited Training or have a Diploma in Counselling and are eligible for BACP Accreditation qualified in individual work.
  • or be psychotherapists eligible for registration by UKCP (CPJA Section) or BPC qualified in individual work.
  • or be Integrative Practitioners or Counselling Psychologists with a strong psychodynamic strand qualified in individual work and holding appropriate professional registrations (UKCP, BACP).
  • will normally have had a minimum of 2 years psychodynamic or psychoanalytic therapy with a psychotherapist registered with BPC or UKCP (CPJA Section).
  • be providing, or be in a position to provide, supervision to a level appropriate to their qualification for more than one counsellor or psychotherapist, either individually or in a group.

Please note all applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English. These are the qualifications in English regarded by WPF as an acceptable minimum level of competence:

  • GCSE grade C
  • Cambridge Proficiency Certificate grade C
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate grade C (with no less than ‘weak’ in any band)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills (English) with a pass grade (Not for Primary Education).
  • Key Skills Level 2 in Communication with a pass grade (Not for Primary Education).
  • British Council IELTS at 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band (see www.ielts.org).

WPF Therapy may require proof prior to the offer of a place.

Applicants should submit:

  • an initial application form
  • a Curriculum Vitae, including details of their training as a psychotherapist or counsellor, their experience of personal therapy, and their current professional registrations
  • a statement giving details of their previous and present experience of providing supervision to counsellors or psychotherapists
  • a statement giving reasons for applying at this time for training in supervision
  • information on your proposed placement/supervision practice for the course
  • Reference from a supervisor

Selection will normally be based on a telephone or online interview.

Foundation Certificate in Counselling Skills

Covid 19

Our Foundation Certificate courses are currently taking place online due to Covid 19 and government advice on social distancing. The training remains highly interactive and experiential; students cover the same curriculum and on successful completion will receive the same award of the Foundation Certificate in Counselling Skills.  We are currently taking applications for January 2021.  The Mode 3 (January 2021) will be different depending on whether you choose to attend Tuesday evening or Friday morning.  The Tuesday evening session will commence online and move back into our training rooms if possible.  The Friday morning session will be online throughout.

This course is for you if you are interested in training in counselling and psychodynamic psychotherapy, if you already use counselling skills in your work, either paid or voluntary, or if you wish to acquire these skills to develop your potential.

This foundation level course  provides students with an opportunity to learn about counselling and psychotherapy whilst developing their counselling skills.  Students will learn skills which can be used to go on to counselling or psychotherapy training or can be used in their existing workplace.  In addition to learning counselling skills, students participate in a personal development group which allows them to expand their self-awareness and interpersonal skills.  This course is ideal for anyone who would like to learn new skills, discover more about themselves, or find out whether a career as a counsellor or psychotherapist is for them. Counselling skills training is a prerequisite for many other counselling and psychotherapy training courses.

The course has four different intakes, allowing individuals to choose which best suits them.

Mode 1  –  October Start requires once weekly attendance (30 sessions) over an academic year of three 10 week terms. Each term includes a mid-term reading week. Individuals have a choice of morning or evening sessions. Morning sessions take place on Wednesdays (9.30am – 12.45pm), whilst evening sessions take place on Wednesday evenings (6.30pm – 9.30pm).

The next October intake will be in 2020. However, we accept applications throughout the year.

This part-time course is for those who have completed a counselling skills course or the equivalent in experience and are interested in training to become a psychodynamic counsellor/psychotherapist.  It is designed to be a transitional course before embarking on a full training. It may also be that you need to spend more time preparing  and developing your existing skills before embarking on a qualifying course. This challenging, intensive course will enable to develop your use of counselling skills and your knowledge and understanding of psychodynamic theory.

The course consists of theoretical seminars, skills practice seminars and experiential groups. Each session consists of two seminars and one experiential group. The first seminar of the day is theoretical and relevant academic papers are discussed.

In the second seminar students practice counselling skills using role-plays, experiential exercises and video work in relation to the following themes:

  • Working ethically and with setting appropriate boundaries
  • How past experiences affect present behaviour
  • Introduction to Freud, Klein and Object Relations
  • Understanding unconscious and conscious processes
  • Exploring the client’s inner world within their wider social, cultural, racial and familial contexts
  • Attachment Theory
  • Neuroscience

Experiential Group
In group sessions, students will be able to explore feelings and relationships and learn about individual and group dynamics and process. The group provides an opportunity to learn about ourselves and our impact on others. They are conducted by an experienced group analytic psychotherapist.

In addition students are asked to attend a Group Theory Seminar. These are offered on a variety of different dates and times. The seminar provides an overview of group theory and an introduction to group psychotherapy as a model.

Schedule
This part-time intensive course runs for seven months, starting in January each year. It comprises once-weekly sessions across two terms. and four Saturday modules. The weekly sessions take place on Thursday mornings, 9.30am – 2.00pm.

WPF Therapy has reviewed the content of this programme with a view to providing a training in psychodynamic psychotherapy that will enable graduates to work professionally with flexibility around mode of delivery of therapy.  This is in line with WPF Therapy’s committment to making psychotherapy accessible and the changing world context which has raised the profile and demand for online therapy.

Training leads to registration with BPC and UKCP and the course is also BACP accredited. The four-year course combines theoretical seminars and clinical experience. Theoretical seminars are delivered online.  Clinical work is both online and in person.  Trainees are expected to provide both.  All students are provided with a clinical placement within WPF Therapy clinical services. Clinical supervision of this work takes place across 44 weeks a year and is online.  The Programme content is reviewed each year.  WPF Therapy uses multi-channel delivery and  some sessions will be delivered remotely.  For 2020-2021 supervision, experiential groups and seminars will be online delivery.  This will be reviewed as the situation with Covid-19 develops in line with government advice and we anticipate that some parts of the course will include in person attendance at London Bridge.  The Daytime Mode runs 9am – 6pm (approximately) whilst the Afternoon Mode runs 1pm – 9pm (approximately).

1.   Training programme

  • Seminar programme including practice and technique, psychoanalytic therapy, contemporary psychotherapy.
  • Trainees are expected to deliver online and in person face to face psychodynamic therapy.
  • Opportunity for additional placements to provide assessments and time limited therapy.
  • Clinical placement in WPF Therapy’s Clinical Services and integral supervision of clinical work.
  • Trainees attend an experiential group throughout training.
  • Trainees have an allocated tutor to support them throughout their training.
  • Clinical seminars once a month.
  • Mental Health Placement
  • Reduced fee on WPF Therapy CPD Programme events.
  • Leads to registration with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) CPJA Section as a psychodynamic psychotherapist.
  • Fulfils the training requirements for individual accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)*;
  • Successful completion of the Clinical Qualification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy also provides a foundation for psychoanalytic psychotherapy training.

(*Please note that entrants who are Accredited for Prior or Experiential Learning (APEL) onto the third year of the course will only be completing 50% of the accredited four-year course and so cannot be said to be doing a BACP accredited training. This does not apply to those entering the second year and completing 75% of the course.)

2.   Admissions criteria

At the time of making an application, application applicants must:

  • Have had at least six months of therapy, ideally psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and maturity. The course is emotionally and academically challenging.  Trainees will be expected to examine themselves and their behaviour on the course and be able to explore psychodynamic issues.
  • Already have experience of using counselling skills with individuals in a face-to-face context. This could be experience gained in a professional or formal counselling capacity or in a voluntary capacity in a helping context such as a regular befriending role.
  • Have successfully completed or be about to complete a basic course in counselling skills of not less than one year’s duration and which is equivalent to the WPF Therapy Foundation Certificate in Counselling Skills.
  • Be personally suitable to train as therapists and to work with clients at WPF Therapy including demonstrating effective use of counselling skills.
  • Provide evidence of the academic potential to complete the theoretical elements of the course, including written assignments. Normally, applicants should have a degree or equivalent.  Applicants who do not have a degree may be asked to submit a piece of written work for assessment.
  • Evidence of competency in English (see below) if English is not your first language.
  • Be able to show appropriate evidence of prior learning and experience for entry into year two or three of the training.
  • Technological competency in working online and access to appropriate equipment and privacy.

Admission requirements for Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning  APEL applicants

Applications who wish to be considered for entry into a later year of training:

  • Should work in a counselling centre or equivalent providing psychodynamic counselling.
  • Have a two-year Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling, or an equivalent psychodynamic qualification.
  • Be currently in approved therapy and have been in this therapy for a minimum of two years.
  • Have equivalency of client hours compared to end of year one or year two of the Clinical Qualification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (20, or 120 hours of psychodynamic counselling/therapy respectively) and are able to demonstrate the qualities of a reflective practitioner.
  • Must be able to supply a reference from their course tutor and/or their work place.
  • Have proven academic ability to comparable level of the end of the second year at WPF Therapy. We will require a piece of recent written work from the applicant. This is normally a clinical essay including an account of clinical work combined with theoretical understanding.

3.   Admissions process

We expect that it will take up to six weeks, from the date of your first interview to a decision being made about an offer to you of a place on the course

There will be up to five other applicants in each group interview.  Group interviews will take place on Zoom.

Interviews for this course take place throughout the year and there is an intake each October.

Individual interview

  • The individual interview usually takes place in the consulting room of an experienced clinician associated with WPF with whom the interview is arranged for a mutually convenient time. During the current health crisis all interviews are taking place online. The timing of this interview is arranged directly with the therapist..
  • This is a personal interview about your self-awareness. We are also looking for a flexible and empathic approach to a diverse range of people and will be assessing your suitability to work with clients from the WPF Therapy clinic.

Once we have received a report from your individual interview, you will be invited to attend a group interview.

Group interview

The group interview will provide:

  • An opportunity to discuss your present experience in a helping or counselling role and your psychodynamic understanding of that experience;
  • An opportunity to demonstrate your capacity to use counselling skills with empathy and sensitivity;
  • A taste of group supervision.
  • An opportunity for you to learn more about the course and to ask any questions you have about training at WPF Therapy.

Reports are received from each stage of the process and will be reviewed by the selection committee.

Trainees are expected to disclose any personal circumstances that may impact on their capacity to complete the training and/or clinical work with WPF Therapy clients. If any such issues arise whilst on the course trainees are expected to disclose any issues with their tutor.

4.   Personal therapy

Applicants must have had at least six months of therapy, ideally psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy, before applying for the training. Applicants do not have to be in therapy at the time of application but, if offered a place on the course, will be required to have started a minimum of once-weekly therapy with a WPF-approved training therapist by the course start date.

WPF Therapy Guidelines for Therapy and a list of WPF Therapy training therapists is available from the training department.

Therapy Advisors

WPF Therapy allocates a therapy advisor to each trainee. A therapy advisor is an experienced training therapist who functions as a special consultant to trainees in order to refer them to a suitable therapist. If you are not established in a suitable therapy at the time of application, it is strongly recommended to consult with their therapy advisor to seek help with this very important step. The therapy advisor will charge a fee of £45 for this consultation. A therapy advisor will be available to you throughout the duration of your training.

 

5.   Programme Aims

5.1. To enable trainees to develop a critical understanding of psychodynamic theory within contemporary society.

5.2. To equip trainees with the skills and techniques of the psychodynamic model to work clinically with a range of clients face to face both in person and online.

5.3. To inform trainees of the limits and context of the psychodynamic approach so that they can critically assess the psychodynamic model that is taught as the core theoretical model of the programme.

5.4. To enable trainees to develop a professional identity as a psychodynamic psychotherapist and to work independently as reflective practitioners.

5.5. To enable trainees to engage in the theoretical debates within the subject area and to contribute to its knowledge base.

5.6. To equip trainees with research awareness and the capacity to evaluate and critique research in the field.

This qualification provides a foundation for psychoanalytic psychotherapy training and for further training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

WPF Therapy organises the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy course flexibly to allow for recognition of previous learning experience and the individual learning needs of trainees.

The course structure enables trainees to proceed to qualification in four years. Applicants with a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling from the former WPF Therapy Network or with equivalent and certificated previous learning experience may be admitted into years two or three of either of the four-year training routes.

* Please note that entrants who are APELed onto the third year of the course will only be completing 50% of the accredited four-year course and so cannot be said to be doing a BACP accredited training. This does not apply to those entering the second year and completing 75% of the course.

Interviews for this course take place throughout the year and there is an intake each October.

Disclosure and Barring Service Checks (DBS)
Completion of a form listing any unspent criminal convictions forms part of the application procedure for this course. This information will not necessarily prejudice your application. A DBS Check is required for all those who will be seeing WPF Therapy clients. This is to be completed as soon as the offer of a place has been accepted.

6.   Programme structure

WPF Therapy reviews the structure of the programme every year.  Therefore, applicants may expect some changes to the programme during their time at WPF Therapy.  WPF Therapy will seek to minimise changes as much as possible so that applicants can prepare for the four years of training.  The course is currently delivered through a combination of seminars, experiential groups and clinical supervision.  For 2020-2021 the majority of the programme will be delivered online.  This will be reviewed in line with government advice but is likely to remain in place for the academic year.

Trainees are expected to access WPF Therapy online resources and all materials are distributed via a virtual learning environment.  In addition to the training sessions set out above, trainees will undertake clinical work with clients at WPF Therapy’s clinic at London Bridge and online (using Microsoft Teams).  Trainees will have the opportunity to see clients during the day, in the evenings or on Saturdays.

The qualification leads to registration with the graduate body of WPF Therapy, the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC).  In order to register with BPC and UKCP graduates are required to be professional members of FPC.    Trainee membership of FPC is free during the training period and trainees are encouraged to make use of their membership.

The components of the course are provided through two alternative routes to qualification.

Timetable and Time Commitment

Due to the current situation with Covid – 19 WPF Therapy is finalising the timetable.  However, for year one sessions applicants can choose either a Tuesday (daytime) or Thursday (afternoon).  The Daytime Mode (Tuesday/Monday) runs approximately 9am – 6.00pm each day.  The Afternoon Mode (Thursday/Friday) runs approximately 1pm – 9pm each day.    In years one and two the attendance day remains the same.  In years 3 and 4 the attendance day changes to a Monday or Friday.  Further details will be provided after application.  You need to think in terms of the training moving from one day a week to up to 2 1/2 days a week as you progress.  One day will be core training.  You need to factor in clinical work and therapy.  By year 4 you should be seeing a minimum of 4 clients a week.  You will need to factor in study time and time to complete written work.  You are expected to read around the subjects and not rely solely on reading lists provided by WPF Therapy.  For those who do not have experience in a mental health or community setting you will also need to complete a Mental Health placement.  This involves the equivalent of half a day a week over six months in a community or voluntary setting.  We expect most applicants to already have this experience on application but some will need to complete it whilst on the training.  Please be aware that whilst WPF Therapy will endeavour to maintain the times of the course as substantially similar from year to year, the timetable is revised annually and there may be changes.

7.   Course description

The course begins and ends with a one week intensive.  This is five days a week  in October and July (dates to be confirmed).  For 2020-2021 we hope that this will be building based but cannot confirm this.  If it is not possible to be building based the intensive weeks will be delivered over Zoom.  There are 30 teaching weeks in a year. Client casework takes place over 44 weeks and supervision continues throughout the year. The course is composed of modules taught at Level 7. Clinical work and supervision are included in the course structure and trainees are required to attend experiential groups.

The course has a pluralist ethos within the psychodynamic and psychoanalytic traditions. Trainees study a wide range of theory, from the seminal contributions of Freud, Jung, Klein, Winnicott and Bion to contemporary views of theory and technique.

Trainees are encouraged to engage critically with the required reading. Some study of cognitive behavioural, family therapy, and groupwork theoretical approaches are undertaken in order to help trainees understand something of the range of psychological treatments which may be suitable for clients.

Course content

  • Level 7 modules;
  • Professional modules;
  • Experiential Groups throughout the training;
  • Tutorials: WPF Therapy allocates a personal tutor to each trainee.
  • Client casework and supervision (continues throughout).  Trainees are not expected to see clients until June of their first year.  For Year One trainees are in a supervision seminar (small groups).  Once they start clinical work trainees move into a small supervision group of 3 or 4 trainees for focussed clinical work.  Clients may be online or in person.
  • Two compulsory Saturday workshops a year.
  • Mental Health Placement – trainees are expected to complete a mental health placement, if they have not already done so.

  Assessment

This is continuous and intended to provide helpful and constructive feedback. Satisfactory completion of, and attendance at, all compulsory modules is required. At the end of each year a staff committee considers the progress of each trainee and makes a recommendation based on a self-assessment, supervisor’s report, seminar reports, viva and the written assignments.

Written Work

Written work is required in each of the level 7 modules, usually an essay of 2,000 words. Essays or student presentations may also be required. Trainees are also required to complete two clinical essays, the first submitted in year two of the course, the second in the final year of the course. These are of 3,000 and 3,500 words respectively. It is expected that trainees are competent in working with online resources and have the capacity to engage in a small research project.

Clinical Placement

One of the unique aspects of training at WPF Therapy is that trainees see clients in the WPF Therapy clinic.  This provides them with an opportunity to work in an active clinic, including with safeguarding and risk assessment.  Trainees are expected to work with the WPF Therapy online client record management system.

WPF Therapy places emphasis on the clinical aspects of our professional courses and the psychodynamic psychotherapy training will provide extensive experience of face-to-face practice in the WPF Therapy clinical service. This is central to our training and usually involves working with both male and female clients of different ages and from a diversity of backgrounds. Trainees may also be able to gain experience in particular specialities such short-term work. The clinical experience as a whole provides an invaluable opportunity for trainees to develop their skills while under the supervision of experienced practitioners, and so equips graduates for a broad-based professional practice once training is completed.

WPF Therapy trainees require a minimum of 320 client contact hours in order to qualify. A percentage of hours are required to be in person and online.  Trainees may also get experience of assessments and time limited work.  On qualification trainees may have the opportunity of transferring their clients to their private practice.  This is subject to the suitability of the client for working in private practice.  There is a transfer out fee payable to WPF Therapy.

Please note that trainees are not allowed to take other trainees on the course as clients whether from their own or a different cohort.

 

Supervision

Weekly group supervision is provided for trainees as a required module of the course. Trainees are expected to attend supervision through the year for 44 weeks a year.

8.   Code of ethics

Trainees on the Clinical Qualification for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy are expected to comply with the WPF Therapy Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. On graduation they are expected to become Professional Members of FPC, which is WPF Therapy’s graduate body.  Trainees are expected to supply information regarding their online presences and to take responsibility that any online profile is accurate.

WPF Therapy reserves the right to extend or terminate training.

This course offers a professional qualification in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, working with patients three times a week. This training leads to registration with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.

In addition to the seminars this course requires trainees to be in three times weekly therapy throughout the duration of their training. Two training patients must be seen three times weekly, one for two years and one for eighteen months. An infant observation, psychiatric placement and five assessed assessments must also be completed.

APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning) criteria are in place to consider the experience of individual applications.

How could Kleinian perspectives help you in your practice? Perhaps you’ve looked at the work of people like Hanna Segal, Wilfred Bion, Betty Joseph, John Steiner and Ron Britton in training. Coming back to these with greater clinical experience allows you to explore what they offer in more depth – to get hold of connections and understand better what goes on in and beyond the consulting room.

This study group is concerned with developments in Kleinian theory and practice over the past seventy years – what has remained central, what has been discarded, what has become better understood and what is contentious today. It is designed to work at different levels, offering food for thought to those unfamiliar with psychoanalytic thinking as well as to those who wish to extend and enrich their understanding and use of Kleinian approaches.

The group has been popular and successful in previous years and is generally fully subscribed. The 2020-2021 course will be entirely online, allowing those who live outside London to take part.

2021 marks the centenary of Melanie Klein’s first psychoanalytic publication, ‘The development of a child’, in which she argued for the liberating effect of responding honestly to children’s questions. Since then, Klein and her associates have played a major role in the development of psychoanalytic thinking and practice. Much that was once considered innovative and controversial in her approach has been taken up by those with reservations about her basic tenets. Lively debate continues among those more sympathetic to Kleinian ways of seeing and working.

It is possible to attend individual sessions, but there is much to be gained by revisiting material that may seem familiar and through involvement in an ongoing process. In previous years there has been a lively dynamism in the group. Members have found a space to share impressions, responses, puzzlement, realisations and insights, with an emphasis on clinical issues.

The readings include earlier and later practitioners, clinical and theoretical considerations. We refer back to Freud and Klein as we consider how thinking and technique have developed, aiming to replicate the analytic cycle of learning and working-through. Detailed notes are provided to help contextualise the readings and support engagement with them.

By participating in this study group, you can expect to gain:

  1. A deeper understanding of projective and identificatory processes in work with clients.
  2. A broader conception of how internal and external worlds interact and affect each other.
  3. Greater clarity about where you stand in relation to key theoretical and ethical issues.
  4. An overview of what the Kleinian tradition has contributed to British Object Relations.

There will be a different paper for each session. The programme centres on readings from key figures in the Kleinian tradition – Freud, Segal, Rosenfeld, Bion, Money-Kyrle, Meltzer, Joseph, Steiner, Britton. We will think about the issues raised in the readings in relation to participants’ clinical experiences and dilemmas.

David Smart’s first career was in multi-disciplinary work in mainstream educational and off-site settings with secondary-age pupils experiencing difficulties. He trained with WPF Therapy to practice as a school counsellor and work privately as a psychotherapist with adults. He is committed to collaborative learning and understands development as a life-long, spiral process. Publications include “Play’ in practice in psychotherapy and education’, European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling, Volume 10, Issue 2, 2008, pp. 147 – 158 (with L. Gomez).

This course will be relevant to practising counsellors/psychotherapists and trainees engaged in clinical work and to those engaged in academic study in the field. There will be a focus on working with the ideas and issues clinically. Priority will be given to applicants who can attend the whole course.

The psychodynamic assessment can be “one of the most momentous days of [a client’s] life.” (Coltart, 1986).

The first meeting between assessor and client can be highly charged. The skilled assessor must quickly engage the client in a complex and emotional encounter which may surprise, disturb or disarm. The quality of the assessment meeting and the skill of the assessor form a crucial part of the process of beginning and its emotional impact often resonates well beyond the encounter itself. Sound assessment skills are crucial to effective clinical practice. However, professional trainings can often give insufficient time and focus to developing understanding of the assessment process.

The aim of this course is to understand the importance of the assessment as essential to good beginnings, to gain an overview of some theory and practice of clinical assessment and an understanding of the emotional impact of the assessment encounter, and its transference implications, to develop skills in assessment interview technique, psychodynamic formulation and approaching the assessment report.  For Day 3 we hope for a maximum of 4 volunteers to conduct assessments on each of Days 3a and 3b.   Assessments can be conducted in Private Practice or public/voluntary sectors.  Not all participants need to volunteer for this, but please consider volunteering when you make your application.   Your learning will be enhanced if you undertake a real assessment.

Day 1: Introducing Assessment: Saturday, 20th June 2020

This day will introduce some key clinical concepts and attitudes for sound psychodynamic assessment.  Participants will consider the impact and influence of the assessment encounter and a range of assessment skills including the conduct of the psychodynamic assessment interview, the maintenance of an evaluative/therapeutic balance, making a recommendation and considering limits. All content will be considered in terms of providing formal clinical assessment in organisational settings and in private practice.

Day 2: Assessment – Essential Skills: Saturday, 4th July 2020

This day will build on learning and skills from Day 1. Participants will explore a range of assessment techniques including approaches to initial contact, risk assessment and management, psychodynamic formulation skills and writing the assessment report.   All practice will be considered in terms of providing formal clinical assessment in organisational settings and in private practice.

Day 3: Assessment Supervision: Saturday, 25th July 

Participants on this day will engage in a live supervision of clinical assessments presented by course participants who have volunteered to conduct an assessment following Day 2. This day will consolidate learning from Days 1 and 2 and enables both presenters and participants to engage fully in the assessment process through supervisory discussion.

Course Leader
Cate Lyon trained at WPF Therapy. She practices and supervises in NHS Primary Care and in Private Practice. She also supervises in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT). Cate has a specialist interest in brief therapeutic encounters, working at pace and depth. As a seminar leader, supervisor, tutor and clinical assessor, Cate teaches and trains extensively in the field. She provides professional CPD workshops for a range of public and private organisations.

Course requirements
The course will be helpful to qualified and training counsellors and psychotherapists who are interested in developing their understanding and technique in clinical assessment. This course is psychodynamic in orientation although practitioners of other modalities are welcome to attend. You must be currently engaged in clinical work in order to be eligible to attend this course. This is a course which focuses on being able to practice conducting an assessment and ideally, you should be in a position to carry out assessments in your work. Participants who volunteer to conduct and present an assessment for Day 3 must be qualified practitioners or in supervised honorary placements with permission to conduct an assessment. We will need volunteers to present on Day 3. If you are interested in volunteering to present please indicate your availability to do so and ensure that you can make arrangements to conduct an assessment.

Those wishing to volunteer to present an assessment on Day 3 should ensure they are in a position to do so and have secured permission from their organisations where necessary. Assessments can only be conducted at WPF Therapy Clinic by participants who are currently WPF Honorary Assessors and with the prior agreement of their supervisor.

Participants must complete all 3 days of the course to receive a Certificate for Continuing Professional Development purposes.
