Somewhere Towards the End by Diana Athill

Somewhere Towards the End by Diana Athill

WPF Therapy runs a regular reading group where works of fiction, memoirs and autobiographies are discussed via a psychoanalytic lens. All are welcome to attend.

Our next group will meet on Friday 17th May 2019 and Jan McHugh will present Somewhere Towards the End by Diana Athill.* This book chimes perfectly with WPF Therapy’s current highlight on maturity and the celebration of the fact that we have been in existence for 50 years, as it explores, with perception and delight, some of the advantages and disadvantages of growing older. Diana died earlier this year after reaching the age of 101, an age we aim to exceed.

To book for the reading group, please complete the application form on our website or contact Training on 020 7378 2050 to be e-mailed an application form.

* What is it like to be old? Diana Athill made her reputation as a writer with the candour of her memoirs – her commitment, in her words, ‘to understand, to be aware, to touch the truth‘. In this book, written when she was in her nineties, and free from any inhibitions that she may once have had, she reflected frankly on the losses and occasionally the gains that old age brought, and on the wisdom and fortitude required to face death. This is a lively narrative of events, lovers and friendships: the people and experiences that taught her to regret very little, to resist despondency and to question the beliefs and customs of her own generation.

We are looking for book group facilitators for our 2019-2020 programme, so please email if you are interested.
